With spring planting upon us, choose seeds that have been bred to provide New Zealand farmers with crops that serve a
certain purpose. Here’s how Cleancrop™ Toto can help you.
Toto is our new turnip in the Cleancrop™ Brassica System. The Cleancrop™ Brassica System is a simple weed management solution that combines the power of broad-spectrum herbicide Telar® and plants bred to tolerate it.
We’ve also been hearing stories from out in the field that it’s a good crop to sow prior to autumn regrassing with some farmers noticing they have cleaner new pastures.
*For weeds controlled by Telar® that require Telar® applied as a foliar spray at post emergence, an application can be made when the crop is at the fourth-true leaf stage or later.
#When applied pre-emerge Telar® is taken up through the roots of weeds when conditions promote their growth.
Maximising yield dilutes fixed costs (e.g. drilling, fertiliser, crop protection etc.). Growing a cultivar that maximises yield in a short timeframe, such as Cleancrop™ Toto turnip, is a great way to reduce the cost per kilogram of dry matter (kg/DM).
Plus, by eradicating key problem weeds that take away moisture and nutrients from the crop, plants have what they need to grow like gangbusters. Toto’s tankard bulb shape also offers excellent crop utilisation (90%).
Owl Farm are pleased with the results from their summer brassicas. “We wanted to get the best value out of the crop,” says Jo Sheridan, Owl Farm’s Demonstration Manager. “Producing a good crop costs as much as a poor crop, so it was important we looked after the crops to maximise yield.”
Growing a cultivar that maximises yield in a short time frame, such as Cleancrop™ Toto turnip, is a great way to reduce the cost per kilogram of dry matter. Owl Farm yielded the crops on 17 December 2019, 55 days after sowing, and interestingly, Cleancrop™ Toto turnip had yielded around 25% more tonnes of dry matter (DM) per hectare (ha) than Barkant® turnip.
Tom Buckley, Owl Farm’s Farm Manager, was impressed with these results. “Even with the extremely dry conditions this summer the crop was valuable. We managed to get eleven weeks of feed out of our eleven hectares of crop - that was 3 kgDM/cow/day from crops that yielded, on average, 10 tDM/ha.” Compare this with Barkant® turnip, which had only yielded around 8 tDM/ha in the same paddock.
